Wedding Video in Roanoke

Wedding Video in Roanoke

Roanoke Virginia is filled with many wonderful wedding vendors that can help you have the best wedding possible. From venues to florist, catering companies to wedding photographers, we have a multitude of companies to choose from.

The same applies to wedding video, sometimes known as wedding film or wedding cinema. It's all the same but the terms change depending on the business that you are looking to hire.

Today, I want to give you some ideas on what to look for when you are searching for the right wedding videographer here in the Roanoke Valley.

What is a Wedding Video Worth to You?

Many couples have already hired a venue, wedding photographer and even the wedding dress at this point, so my question to you is what is a wedding film worth?

It's all in the eye of the couple, but I want you think about this.

A year after you are married, are you still going to have the flowers from your wedding?

What about what you said to each other on your wedding day, will you remember what you said?

Well, if you are telling yourself that you'll have your wedding photos, that's true, but will your photos help you remember and relive moments on the most important day of your life?

The value of a wedding film is often under estimated and I can tell you as a wedding filmmaker with 23 years of experience, I see it a lot.

Regret, that is. I meet with many couples and those that decide not to hire me or anyone of my video counterparts will regret not having a video one year after marriage. In fact, nearly 74% of couples that do not have any wedding video, regret not hiring a pro.

Keys to a Good Wedding Video

A few keys to important wedding video are experience, quality, value and services. While each is good by themselves, to have an important wedding film, you need to be able to combine all of the elements together.

Experience is needed to be able to not only make sure you get the right shots, but to tell a story on
video. Story-boarding, an important key to any film, comes from years of experience of being able to come across and tell the story.

Quality of your video is another important factor, using older camera gear, not understanding lighting and even the sound of your wedding film are all dependent on the overall quality. For example, you might have a great eye for the video shot, but if you're using a cheap $150 microphone and it makes a bad hum, then quality of your film has just been lowered.

Value and the level of services provided are great keys to a couple, being able to effectively hire a video professional and yet get the value from their services is very important. Value added services such as offering extras like cameras, backup gear, warranties and even backups can greatly effect a client being hired or not.

Meet with the Videographer

If at all possible, meet with the wedding videographer here over a cup of coffee or beverage. You want to be able to get to know the person that will be providing your film. They will be spending all day working to create your film so you will want to hire someone with a great personality, experience and understanding of what you expect them to do.

Not every video professional is right for the couple and vise versa, so I suggest meeting with them over coffee, try to set aside about an hour of time to meet with them.

I also suggest to ask them some questions about what they do. Here are some great questions I recommend that you ask.

Another thing that I suggest is ask the video pro to bring some gear so you can see it for yourself. They don't have to bring all of it, just a bag or camera. Working with cheap gear is going to get you cheap results. Check out this YouTube video I created with a $500 DSLR vs a $1800 DSLR and wireless microphone. BIG Difference.

The Basics

Each wedding videographer in the Roanoke Valley should have the basics in their toolbox to be able to create an effective wedding film. You don't need everything out there to make it professional, but the basics are always important to have. Here are some important basics any one of us should have.

  • 2 Cameras (Either DSLR, full shoulder or aciton camera or any combination of them)
  • Tripod, Monopod or both
  • Wireless UHF microphone
  • Extra batteries
  • Extra memory cards
  • Single Light with battery
  • Camera Bag
That list is the bare minimum they should have with them. Most of us carry far more than that and we often have a slue of tools we use to get the shots that we need. Some of the extra bells and whistles can include:

  • Drone
  • 3-4 Cameras
  • Sliders
  • Gimbals
  • Complete Light Kits
  • Power Packs
  • Adjustable lights
  • Second wireless mic system
  • Live Streaming System
A well seasoned videographer will have anywhere from $4,000-$7,000 worth of gear they bring at a wedding. After all, they need it to film an emotional and effective wedding video.

Were Not all the Same

I want you to think about wedding films in our area as like a pair of shoes. We're all different and we all have different styles, types of gear, methods and ideas about how to go about making a great wedding film.

Many of us have backgrounds in broadcasting and have many years under our belts while some of us are new to the industry.

Pricing really depends on a few factors, such as availability, skill set and the types of services each provides but an average wedding film will cost you about $1,500 for a full day film. Expect to pay somewhere within that range.

No matter who you choose, get a wedding video, period.

You do not want to be one of those couples that wishes they had invested the money into getting a film but choose to take a chance and skip it.

I'm sure that all the wedding videographers in the Roanoke area will agree, choosing a wedding video will be the smartest choice in being able to remember your important day!
